Cholesterol is a steroidal substance that is part of every cell of ours. It is an important building block of nerves and of some hormones. Most of it is produced by the organism itself, some is also taken in the diet. An increased level of cholesterol in the blood is caused either by an inappropriate diet or by increased synthesis of cholesterol in the liver.
